Two middle fingers down, pinky, pointer finger and thumb extended – kind of what people refer to as “devil horns”. It is stated on the Hollywood Reporter that Gene Simmons has filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The hand gesture was first seen used on Simmons with the band on Nov. 14, 1974 during the “Hotter Than Hell” tour. The claim is on the hand gesture for “entertainment, namely, live performances by a musical artist; personal appearances by a musical artist.”

This isn’t going to be that easy for Simmons to challenge. The gesture dates back to the 5th Century BC founder of Buddhism, along with cases of other artists flashing the similar sign, including John Lennon on a cover photo of the Beatles single “Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby” back in 1966.

Additionally, the sign also has a different meaning in certain Mediterranean cultures.

Stay tuned to see how it plays out.
